I am on top of a mountain with my skis on, and while itâs terrifying how high up we are, the view really is something. If I die at least it will be in such a pretty place! I try to squash the negative thoughtsâthey arenât helping. I remind myself I made it to the top, and thatâs a great start. I was tempted to stay in the lodge, drinking cocoa by the fireâbut I didnât want to be the odd Housley out. If my children and husband have the courage to fly down a mountain, I can do it, too, so I sign up for skiing lessons. I had to put my big pants (snow pants, actually) on and face my fear. Itâs a fear I swear the instructor can smell, and he asks, âDo you trust me, Tamera?â I nod my head; my life is in his hands! âTamera, the trick is to visualize where you want to go, and your skis will follow you there,â I start to move forward, as slowly as I possibly canâbut I canât seem to stop myself from looking toward the edge of the mountain. Itâs like I need assurance that Iâm not going to fall off. âTamera! Donât look that way, youâre navigating yourself toward the wrong side. Have faith. Look forward and move forward.â I realize that I need to shift my focus from what could happen (plunging off a cliff) to what is actually happening. I start again, visualizing the trail in front of me. I slowly start to descend. As I continue to visualize where I want to go, I make steady progress. Iâm doing it! I havenât lost controlâIâve let go of my fear. Iâm moving, but Iâm still the one in charge. I spend the next one and half hours navigating my way down the mountain. I donât crash into a tree, I donât get run over (nor do I plow down any other skiers), and I donât plunge off the sideâIâve made it to the bottom intact.
